How toxic is the United States?
I analyzed this data along with Priceonomics friendly clients. I prefer standing with companies that support rigorous assessments to maintain their status with supporting planet before profits. So naturally, the toxicity levels are important to me as I work with a B-corp company weekly. This particular beauty company created its own regulatory standards. I want my skin products to be safe. What are the most commonly released toxins? In which states are the most chemicals emitted? Which industries contribute the most to this pollution? This is all based on sourced data from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s TRI reporting form (2016).
What are the key US toxic findings?
- Alaska produces the most toxins (834 million pounds) which is more than double the volume of toxins from the second leading offending state of Nevada (317 million pounds).
- The most common products of the mining industry are the main culprits for contributing to toxic net waste numbers. Zinc and lead compounds are the most common toxins. Metal mining accounts (1.5 billion) for three times as much toxins than that of chemicals (515 million).
- While Alaska leads the list as the worse toxic offender, Nevada has clusters of counties that contribute to high toxic levels.
- The most toxic cities are Kotzebue, AK (756 million pounds) and Indianapolis (10.9 million pounds).
Kotzebue, AK leads the nation in producing the most toxins in the more populous cities.
What can you do to aid the body’s natural detoxification process?
The natural detox has three natural path ways. Our bodies naturally detoxify through sweat, urine and bowel movements. There are some promising studies from Europe that suggest humans can improve their health outcomes. People should reduce toxins earlier in life rather than waiting for a not-s0-good autoimmune response like allergies, respiratory issues, obesity, etc. By the way, Illinois is ranked #7 in terms of toxicity. Moreover, organic superfoods, filters and lifestyle changes can improve the overall well-being for most people.
